Clay Frogs!
2nd graders started with a pinch pot and turned it into a frog! Hand building skills such as "scratch, we, wiggle" were practiced. How cute are they?!
"Blue" (dogs) Foxes
After students learned all about George Rodrigue and his famous Blue Dog paintings (and more), they created their own wonderful versions except as (Nuckols Farm) FOXES! Bringing them alive with tint and shade, the students created a dimensional fox completing it with a complementary color for the background.
Eric Carle Inspired Roosters
Students created their feathery friends after learning about Eric Carle and his illustration process. Second graders first created textured, painted paper - warm colors, cool colors and neutral colors. Just like Carle, then they used this beautiful paper to create their roosters. I love the personalities that these convey!
Self Portraits
Wonderful images of "self." Some with a tissue paper background!

Collaborative Color Wheel (BIG) Flowers
2nd graders learned about analogous color schemes – these are NEIGHBOR colors on the color wheel. Students painted various sheets of paper with their table color while also adding an analogous color and white. Then they cut petals from the painted paper and sorted them into color groups.
Finally, they worked as a table TEAM to create these wonderful and COLLABORATIVE
color wheel flowers! Enjoy!

Rooster Collages inspired by Eric Carle
2nd graders discussed author and illustrator, Eric Carle, and the techniques he uses for creating his wonderful book illustrations. Students started by creating their painted paper - warm colors, cool colors, and neutral colors. Not only did they experiment with blending colors, but they also created interesting TEXTURE within the paint. The next step was to begin cutting shapes out of the paper to create their COLLAGE - first starting with the rooster's fun back feathers. Adding all the other bird's parts with their papers, students created AMAZING artwork about this cute creature!
LOOK I'm in Starry Night!
The Starry Night is an oil on canvas painting by the Dutch post-impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh. Painted in June, 1889, it depicts the view (with the notable addition of an idealized village) from the east-facing window of his asylum room at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. It has been in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City since 1941. It is Van Gogh's best-known painting and one of the most recognized monuments in the history of Western culture.
2nd graders studied the painting and learned about Van Gogh's life. Students created their version of this powerful painting and added themselves reaching for the sky!
A recent article claimed that Van Gogh actually thought his painting, Starry Night, was a failure! Check out this cool video (created an animated version of the painting (and also has an interactive app)!

Patterned Pumpkins that POP!
2nd graders used TINTS and SHADES to create their eye popping pumpkins. Students finished their paintings off with various line and pattern. The results are amazing. And check out the picture with the 3rd grade "real" book report pumpkins in the hallway. Hope you like orange...

(Encore lesson!) Can you say: Hundertwasser?
Our NFES 2nd graders can!
Friedensreich Regentag Dunkelbunt Hundertwasser
(December 15, 1928 – February 19, 2000)
Hundertwasser was an Austrian artist and architect. Born Friedrich Stowasser in Vienna, he became one of the best-known contemporary Austrian artists, although controversial, by the end of the 20th century.
Our artwork, inspired by Hundertwasser, includes an oil pastel patterned sky and fantasy-like buildings! Would you like to visit?

Georgia O'Keefe inspired Flowers
Georgia O'Keefe (1887-1986) was an American artist. She is best known for her magnified paintings of natural objects like bones and flowers as well as her landscape paintings. O'Keefe spent many years of her life in New Mexico, and her paintings often show the Southwestern desert.
First, 1st graders created beautiful watercolor backgrounds. Then students decided on a flower and drew it magnified - having parts of the flower go off the edges of the paper. The final touch was to add black glue over the pencil lines, creating an interesting raised line. I think Georgia would approve!

Egyptian-inspired "Canopic" Jars
Inspired by canopic jars from Ancient Egypt, our second graders created clay coil jars. The lids of these jars represent an animal they most relate to. Inside the jars, viewers will find three charms which symbolize the students' reasons for picking their animal.
Lanterns inspired by Chinese New Year
Gung hey fat choy! Happy New Year! January 31st - the year of the horse.
'Gung hey fat choy' is a Chinese phrase which means 'Best wishes and congratulations. Have a prosperous and good year.' The phrase is usually used at the beginning of the year when there are family reunions and celebrations for the blessings of living to see a new year.
2nd graders created these beautiful lantern drawings depicting pattern as well as popular
motifs such as bamboo and cherry trees. You will also see the color RED which is important within the Chinese culture.
Red, corresponding with fire, symbolizes good fortune and joy. Red is found everywhere during Chinese New Year and other holidays and family gatherings. A red envelope is a monetary gift which is given in Chinese society during holiday or special occasions. The red color of the packet symbolizes good luck. Red is strictly forbidden at funerals as it is a traditionally symbolic color of happiness.

Spring Flowers
Spring Break inspired us! What happens when you let the creativity bloom?! Students let the watercolor paint mix and puddle into "blobs" which we would later transform. After the paintings were dry, students looked to see what kind of flowers the paint suggested. Viola! Beautiful "blobs" into fascinating flowers!
Tree Silhouette
2nd graders created a glowing watercolor background for their tree silhouettes!
Clay Frogs in a Monet-inspired Habitat
Just some of our friends... Please visit ALL of our frogs in the library! We were inspired by Claude Monet's gardens and brushstrokes!
Bubble Gum Self Portraits
2nd graders created self portraits with a surprise!
Beautiful "Blue Dogs"
After students learned all about George Rodrigue and his famous Blue Dog paintings (and more), they created their own wonderful versions. Bringing them alive with tint and shade, the students created a dog that communicated something about themselves.
