Collagraphs/Prints
Mixed Media Self Portraits
Students used Comic Life to take a “selfie” and then manipulated it within Comic Life. They used Google Documents to write about themselves and added it behind their portrait. Finished off with a fun frame, these portraits communicate in many different ways!
Clay Frame with Weaving
5th graders created wonderful weavings and clay frames...and they joined them together! Our emphasis was on color and texture.

Tree Landscapes inspired by Wolf Kahn
5th graders examined landscapes created by Wolf Kahn. Kahn, although born in Germany, has spent most of his life in Vermont and New York. He is still creating artwork today. After learning a bit about his life, inspiration, and art, students used a new method of drawing in order to create a dreamy landscape similar to Kahn. The technique involves dipping chalk pastel into gesso (white) paint to create a paste-like consistency. Beautiful!
Mexican-inspired Tin Ornaments
Mixed Media Self Portraits
A favorite is back! Students used Photo Booth to express themselves, converted pictures in Comic Life, used sharpie and paint on a transparency, then completed the self portrait by writing about themselves for the background text. The final result - wonderful portraits that express and communicate to the viewer many things about the artists. Amazing job 5th graders.

Square 1 Art Romero Britto-inspired Animals
After learning about Romero Britto, 5th graders chose a favorite animal to transform into a colorful party of pattern!

Romero Britto-inspired Paintings
5th graders created beautiful, patterned paintings inspired by the contemporary artist Romero Britto. Click here for more information.
Chagall-inspired Self Portraits
5th graders learned about the artist Marc Chagall. Marc Chagall was born in a Hasidic community outside Vitebsk, Russia. He incorporated many childhood memories into one of his most famous paintings, "I and the Village." Students discussed this painting and created a self portrait inspired by Chagall. Included in their drawings are: a favorite memory, a side (profile) self portrait, a place that they enjoy and a family portrait. (Ms. Kim, Student Teacher)

Grid Tree Landscapes
5th graders learned about Loretta Grayson, a contemporary artist from Australia. Grayson creates imaginative tree landscapes with rich oil pastels, black watercolor wash and acrylic paint. Students used math and ruler skills to create a 2” square grid for their canvas. Learning about positive and negative space helped students to not just see the branches, but the space around around them. Using analogous color groups they filled in the squares carefully and thoughtfully. Students then decided where to carve in texture within select oil pastel squares. Some students also finished it off with some special gold and silver details! Amazing work and our thanks to Ms. Grayson for the inspiration! (See the blog for an update on Ms. Grayson's comments on our artwork - all the way from Australia!)

Flower Collagraphs
Collagraph is a basic method of printmaking using a board with collage materials glued onto it to form a relief surface with a variety of textures. A very creative and experimental form of
printmaking, collagraph prints can be made with many different materials. 5th graders used poster board and cardboard to create a collage inspired by spring. Using a brayer (roller), students used the three basic colors of printing - cyan, magenta and yellow - and created these amazing collagraphs!

Silhouettes
= An image of something or someone represented by a solid shape, usually a dark color and shown on a light background. The shape is created from the outline of the subject and filled in solid with no features.
Cantrell-inspired Clay Faces
As you saw in our earlier project drawings, 5th graders learned about Kimmy Cantrell, a (living!) Georgia artist. Influenced by African masks and Cubism, Cantrell creates expressive clay sculptures. Students first created drawings (see earlier gallery post) and then brought them to life in clay. The students carefully thought about the sections and features of their abstracted faces, creating interesting texture in specific areas. The faces were glazed with beautiful colors and washed with India In. To view their amazing wall sculptures up close, please check out the library and art studio display window. Fabulous job 5th graders!
Koi Fish "Stained Glass"
After learning about and watching a quick video about these amazing fish, students dove in and swam with it! After drawing the fish, bubbles, and lily pads, 5th graders went over their lines with black glue, adding additional lines to create the stained glass effect. Sections were then painted in carefully with vibrant watercolor. Enjoy.
Cantrell-inspired Abstract Faces
5th graders learned about Kimmy Cantrell, a (living!) Georgia artist. Influenced by African masks and Cubism, Cantrell creates expressive clay sculptures. Students started with sketchbook ideas, finalized an idea and created a fabulous face. These drawings will then come to life in clay. Stay tuned for the results!
Paintbrush Still Life
Highlight and shadow bring these to life!
Mixed Media Self Portraits
Students used Photo Booth to express themselves, converted pictures in Comic Life, used sharpie and paint, then completed it with text (either writing about themselves or using a favorite song or book excerpt). Note: Credit for song lyrics or book excerpts noted on their original work's label.
