Clay Bird Baths
Kindergarten artists learned how to create a "pinch pot" (or two)! Add two together and you have a bird bath!. Students then created their feathery friend for the edge. Using a special confetti glaze for the bird and clear for the bird bath, the creations were finished off with "water" created from marbles that melted in the kiln/glaze firing (note the last picture). Beautiful!
Close-up Cows
How cute are these cows? Our artists learned to use shapes and lines to create their friends, learned about the "horizon line," and used new painting skills to color their creations. What personality!
Owl Babies
After reading the book, Owl Babies, Kindergarten students created TEXTURE in lots of fun ways! Students used cotton balls to paint the bodies, scrunched the paper for the branch, added sharpie lines for bark, and used Qtips for the stars! Are these adorable or what?!
Abstract/Line Painting in Primary Colors
First, our artists took "a line for a walk" and created as many different lines as they could. After creating a dynamic line composition, we studied primary colors - what they are, why they are important and what you can do with them. Kindergarten students filled in their compositions with primary colors, creating an exciting painting. Do you know your primary colors! Check out one of Mrs. Hampton's favorite videos.

Would you like some lemonade?
Kindergarten students are ready for summer (and maybe a lemonade stand)! Enjoy a glass!
Color Wheel Umbrellas
After learning about PRIMARY colors and SECONDARY colors, Kindergarten artists drew themselves dressed for the puddles and hiding behind a (color wheel) umbrella. Instead of using the secondary colors right from the watercolor palette, the artists mixed their own! As a final touch, they had fun making it rain colors!
Hedgehog/Porcupine Clay Pencil Holders!
How cute (and useful) are we?! Kindergartners learned how to form a pinch pot, turned it upside down, added some features and created a sweet little creature.
Behind Spring Flowers Self Portrait
Kindergartners learned about facial proportions and created their self portrait with a little twist: peeking out behind some colorful spring flowers!

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss - Truffula Tree Landscapes
Kindergarten artists celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday with fun printing and painting techniques! We used WHOOSH BALLS to create the truffula tops (check out the blog posts for pics)! We also discussed the size differences of the trees in order to show distance and depth. As a nod to the earth, we decided that we would rather live in our colorful and fun truffula landscapes instead of living around the gray Thneed factory with no animals around.
Porcupining - A Prickly Love Story
In preparation for our upcoming visit by author Lisa Wheeler, Kindergartners met Cushion and Barb. Cushion, a porcupine, is looking for love and finds it with Barb, a hedgehog. This prickly pair's story continues into "Hokey Pokey - Another Prickly Love Story." Students used a different method of painting this pair's quills - a fork!
Scarecrows
I am not sure that our scarecrows would be very good at their jobs...they are too cute!
Pumpkins by the Moonlight
Kindergarten artists learn about primary colors and secondary colors. Students mixed their own orange from red and yellow! Other concepts included oil pastel mixing, foreground/background, pumpkin life cycle, as well as cutting and gluing skills. Beautiful fall-inspired collages!
Square 1 Art - NFES Foxes!
Kindergartners learned more about their school mascot by drawing him using shapes and lines.

Pinch Pot Clay Creations
What can you make starting with a pinch pot?! Alot! Kindergarteners learned how to create a basic pot and then they turned it into anything they wanted. Creations included cups, bowls, bird baths, and animals. Great job!
"In the Rain" Self Portraits
Are these darling or what?! Kindergarten artists learned about portraits, self portraits, and how to show the figure in a pose or action. Then viola - awesome and wonderful kiddos in the rain! First they drew with a sharpie and then students finished off their self portraits by "watercolor" rain - very fun!
Kindness Quilt
After reading “Kindness Quilts” by Nancy E. Wallace, each Kindergarten student created two hearts. Red hearts indicate a time when someone was being kind to them while the white hearts indicate a time they were being kind to others.
Snowy (Virginia) Cardinals
How cute are we?! Kindergarten artists learned about our Virginia state symbols (including the official state drink - milk!). Using their developing drawing and painting skills, students created cute cardinals from basic shapes and inviting environments for their furry friends.
Happy Holidays!
Kindergarten painted these gorgeous poinsettias! Students learned a bit about Georgia O'Keefe, an American painter who loved her flowers. O'Keefe is well known for her flowers which she illustrated close up and almost abstracted. Students used oil pastel, tempera paint and finished it off with some glitter for some holiday sparkle.
NFES Foxes
Kindergarten students learned to create their school mascots using shape and line. They continued to build their skills using oil pastels. Note how they blended their colors in order to get just the right fur for their new friend.
Rocket the Dog!
Meet Rocket! Rocket is a dog who learns to read with the help of his teacher, the Little Yellow Bird. The Little Yellow Bird also teaches Rocket how to write his own stories with the collection of wonderful words which he has found all around him.

Happy Spring!
Kindergarten students learned about STILL LIFES and created a wonderful vase full of spring flowers for you to enjoy!
Whooooo is ready for Spring?
Kindergarten artists listened to stories and learned a bit about owls before creating their wonderful collages. After giving their nocturnal families a beautiful evening with moon and stars, students used basic shapes to created their feathered friends. These friends are special, made from fun, patterned papers with no two owls being exactly alike. Wonderful cutting and gluing K students! And whoooooooo doesn't love googly eyes for a finishing touch?!
Snowy Cardinals
Kindergarten artists used basic shapes to create their Virginia state bird. Add some evergreen trees with dashes of snow and you get some rather cute feathery friends!
Winter Self Portraits
Oh the weather outside is frightful... Students learned about drawing and correct placement of the facial features. They also dressed themselves up with special patterned hats and mittens while learning about the watercolor resist technique. We are ready for the cold!
We are Nuckols Farm Foxes!
Students used shape and texture to create their awesome oil pastel foxes.
