Creative Column Collagraphs!
3rd graders looked at drawings of Ancient Greek columns and discussed the three main classic orders - Doric, Ionic and Corinthian.
Students acted as ARCHITECTS and created their own column by gluing foam and cardboard to a backing. This PRINTING METHOD is called COLLAGRAPH printing. It is essentially a COLLAGE used as a stamp. 3rd graders printed single, double and triple prints. They picked their favorite, most successful prints and matted them together.

Imaginary Animals
After an animal unit in their classrooms, 3rd graders combined characteristics from various animals in order to create their own "new" animals. After drawing these imaginary animals on paper, they created the animals in 3D using clay. Finished off with paint, their animals came to life!
Self Portraits with Adjectives
Students created these amazing self portraits with oil pastel. We discussed the self portrait as a visual communication tool after reviewing facial feature placement. As a final touch, the students took it a step further by also communicating to the viewer via adjectives describing their personalities. Those words were "carved" in the layered oil pastel background. Enjoy!

Mixed Media Still Life
3rd graders created amazing still life collages using a wide variety of materials - tissue paper, paint, foam, beads, buttons, yarn, pipe cleaners, sequins, you name it!
Roads to Home Prints
3rd graders created an abstract design print from their neighborhood map. Maps were printed using Google Earth and then edited down to the important streets or features of the student's neighborhood

Whimsical Birds!
3rd graders used various materials (cardboard, paper, tape) to construct an armature for their bird (or fish). Students then used three layers of plaster craft (essentially the plaster coated web that is used to create casts for broken bones!) to cover their armature. Students finished with paint and fun pattern and now the birds are ready to fly!
Neon - Take 2
Here is a glimpse at the paintings without the black light...
Neon Animals!
3rd graders picked a favorite animal and made it big (17" square) and bright! After putting the finishing touches on their friends, students were able to view their painting in the back room under BLACK LIGHT! What fun - lots of oooooh's and awhhhh's. Every students' paintings are below and seen with the black light. Enjoy! (* Barnes and Noble friends will be coming tomorrow!)
Oil Pastel Self Portraits
Students created oil pastel portraits, concentrating on creating highlights and shadows to illustrate a realistic (more three dimensional) self-portrait. Oil pastel techniques such as blending and layering were also focused on.
In order to communicate more about themselves to the viewer, students repeated 10 adjectives about themselves in the background. To create the “carved” effect, they created three heavy layers of oil pastel, starting with the lightest, and then carving the words with a wooden dowel tool.

Mixed Media Collages
Raymond Saa is a contemporary artist from Miami, Florida. Please check out his site. (Here is a bit more information on him as well.)
Students and I looked at various works from Saa, noting his use of color, shape, repetition, unity, and texture - oh yes, and fish scales, house shingles and more:)! 3rd graders began by creating various painted papers using acrylic paint and gloss medium while also adding texture by combing through the paint if they wanted. They also added either a completely white or black painted paper to their group as well. Many choices had to be made: colors? textures? white or black? shape of "shingle?" size of "shingle?" group the colors or mix them up? And then of course the hard work of overlapping and gluing! I can not begin to tell you how THRILLED I am at the results!!! I really love these - every student had great success. Photos just do not do them justice - please come see them in our main hallway.

Puppets with Aspirations!
Students created sock puppets of what they aspire to be when they grow up. During this art project, they learned a new skill of sewing and used construction paper for their uniforms. These 3rd graders have the ability to reach their career goals with the help of their teachers, family and friends!
Beautiful Bird Cages
Who doesn't love a feathery friend? 3rd graders created a mixed media home for their patterned birds using paint, tissue paper, patterned paper and newspaper. Color, texture, new painting techniques, and unconventional materials were just some of our learning areas for this project.
Beautiful Birch Trees
3rd graders learned about three areas of an artwork: Foreground, Middle ground and Background.
In order to create depth, trees that are in the foreground are BIGGER and LOWER on the page. Middle ground trees are medium in size and higher on the page. Background trees are the smallest and the highest on the page.
Students printed their birch trees using a dipping and scraping method over a watercolor background. To finish their landscape, the students added oil pastel details on the trees, sky and forest floor. Beautiful job!

Self Portraits
3rd graders created these wonderful self portraits with tempera paint. The self portraits communicate to the viewer what the artists look like. The students then took the project further - they shared personal thoughts through their creative writing. This helps the viewer get to know the artist better. Great job 3rd graders!

Singing in the Rain
Spring is colorful for our 3rd grade artists! Check out our fun, "caught in the colorful rain" self portraits.
Mixed Media Still Life
3rd graders created an interesting mix of textures and color for their still life. They used paints, newspaper, music sheets, black glue and oil pastel. Their still life was to say something about their own lives and interests. Is someone was to come into your house and look at what was on your table, what would it say about you?
Neon Animals
Meet our bright new friends! 3rd graders had a great time creating their animals out of neon paint. We even ended by looking at our creations under a black light (Check our the blog post.)! A fun ending to a fun project!
Birch Trees
3rd graders learned about three areas of an artwork: Foreground, Middleground and Background. The birch trees were created with a dip and scrape method, then oil pastel was added to enhance the details. Snow or Fall? Paint or Oil Pastel? Students chose what season they wanted and worked hard to create an inviting landscape. You might even find some furry friends! Beautiful!
Mixed Media
3rd grade artists looked at the contemporary work of Carol Nelson. She states “Abstract painting is completely different from realistic painting. Since there is no scene before me, no flower, animal, or still life to look at, where does the painting come from? That's the creative part of me.”
Students, like Nelson, used shape, texture and line to create a beautiful abstracted landscape. They used tissue paper, glue, cardboard, acrylic paint and black glue.
(btw-pictures really don't do these justice - the layered colors and rich textures need to be seen in person)
