We are going to tell you a bit about the artist, Vincent Van Gogh. His style of painting was called Post Impressionism. Vincent Van Gogh was born in the Netherlands in 1853 and died in 1890.
Vincent van Gogh was not well known during his lifetime but today, he is one of the most famous painters of all time. He only lived a short time but painted about 800 pictures. Van Gogh tried to express his thoughts and emotions in his paintings, often working without stopping, spending all of his money on paints – even forgetting to eat!
Van Gogh is known for his contrasting colors and his impasto style filled with hatch strokes and rolling, pulsing motions of his paintbrush. Impasto means he put his paint on the canvas with a knife or brush, forming lots of texture.
One of his most famous paintings, Sunflowers, is rich in color contrasts and heavy brushstrokes. 4th graders studied Van Gogh and created the amazing paintings that you see in our main hallway!
Van Gogh said:
“If you hear a voice within you say you cannot paint, then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced.”
