Maurice Bernard Sendak was an American illustrator and writer of children's books. He became widely known for his book Where the Wild Things Are, first published in 1963.
An illustrator is someone who creates the pictures for books and the author is the one that writes the books. Sendak did both!
Sendak was born in 1928 and lived until 2012. In addition to his books, Sendak illustrated hundreds of other stories written by other authors.
Sendak received many important awards for his illustrations as well as his writing. He even has an elementary school named after him in California!
The 4th grade will be presenting their recorder program for us this afternoon as well at tonight during the PTA program. And guess what?! The program is based on Sendak’s book, Where the Wild Things Are. Be sure to note 4th grade’s OWN “Wild Things” decorating the set!
Enjoy the show and Happy Youth Art Month!
